In Dubmire Primary School we teach English to enable our pupils to communicate effectively in speech and writing, to listen with understanding and to become independent and confident readers. We want them to make good progress in order to participate fully in their school, social and cultural lives.  We place English at the centre of our thematic curriculum, with good quality books and novels forming the basis of learning.

There is a daily literacy lesson in KS1 and 2, with up to an additional 1 and a half hours per week in KS2, and 2 hours in KS1, for other English activities.  Reception classes have integrated English activities that include CLLD, reading and writing aspects.

Early reading is taught using the Letters and Sounds phonic program and is supported by Floppy Phonics resources.  Children learn to read and write their sounds simultaneously and then apply them in reading.  In KS2, reading skills and comprehension are developed during literacy lessons and focused Guided Reading sessions.  All children have opportunities to read regularly in school, whilst also taking a reading book home weekly that is selected from our wide selection of Oxford Reading Tree scheme books.  We have a school library on site, which children access on a weekly basis and enjoy choosing a book to take home to share and read for pleasure.
