In Dubmire Primary School we teach French to all children in Years 3 to 6. We feel that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. The time allocated for the teaching of French each week is one hour and this can be implemented in a number of ways: either as a one hour session or as shorter lessons throughout the week.
We aim to introduce the children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun such as by playing games, singing songs or through role-play. The children will be taught to ask and answer questions, use correct pronunciation and grammar and develop their listening skills in the foreign language. They will be encouraged to use a dictionary and to speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.
It is our aim that children should make substantial progress in one language and this will in turn lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at Key Stage 3.
