Physical Education

At Dubmire Primary School we believe that physical activity is fundamental in a child’s development, helping them to be competent in basic movements and co-ordination. We believe that physical activity needs to be embedded into daily routines, therefore linking physical activity into our environments. Early physical activity is crucial in setting foundations for basic motor skills and becoming physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

We feel regular Physical Activity can improve quality of life, improve health, promote social inclusion, raise individual self-esteem and confidence and counter anti-social behaviour. It is felt that school plays a key role in promoting an active lifestyle for its young people through developing their attitudes, knowledge and competence to help encourage a commitment to physical activity.

In EYFS and KS1 we encourage children to build on their natural enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about the world. Children work individually and in combination to watch, listen, experiment, and then develop their skills in movement and coordination in a variety of situations.

In KS2 we encourage children to be active and use their creativity and imagination in physical activity. Children learn new skills, find out how to use them in different ways, and link them to make actions, phrases and sequences of movement. We promote children to communicate, collaborate and compete with each other to help embed values such as fairness and respect. This allows children to develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own successes.

Our School Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of activities
  • are physically active for sustainable periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.
