"A high quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives....."

Curriculum Intent: What is our aim?

The Geography scheme of work intends to provide a rich and varied curriculum, including a variety of reading, writing and mapping activities, which will enhance the experiences and geographical understanding of children, using the local area, the wider community and the natural world. The teaching of geography is a vehicle for fostering interest and enjoyment through the study of geographical enquiry, human and physical geography along with geographical knowledge. Children will be equipped to locate continents, countries and oceans across the world, as they discover and comprehend cultural differences.

At Dubmire, we strive to open pupils’ thoughts to geography being a compass that activates the magnets of ‘curiosity, knowledge and wisdom’.

Geography teaching at Dubmire aims to give all children a strong understanding of where they belong and their place in the world. It allows children to appreciate and respect the diversity of civilizations that exist across the continents, hopefully seeing geography as being the study of earth as the home of people.

Through thoughtfully selected units of work, children develop a sense of identity and belonging within the community in which they live and the world around them. Studying the relationship between places near and far builds on the existing learning of the children, it embeds geographical skills, whilst using in depth knowledge and understanding of how to bridge divides and bring people together.

“Geography is a subject which holds the key to our future”

Curriculum Implementation: How is geography delivered?

The teaching of Geography provides children with an opportunity to develop a knowledge and understanding of places and themes, including patterns and processes. Lessons are planned to bring the real world to the children, where they develop an informed appreciation of the earth and its inhabitants. Learning encourages children to become skilled geographers as they undertake enquiry-based projects.

Teachers deliver well-structured lessons with an emphasis on geographical vocabulary. Discussions provide a platform for children to share their knowledge and reflect upon what they have achieved and the next steps in their learning journey. Teachers use prior learning to inform planning to ensure progression and fluency is maintained. This integrated approach enables children to recall and apply embedded knowledge in a range of contexts, within geography but also within a range of other curriculum areas.

Geography provides practical and ‘hands on’ experiences for all children, which are used by teacher to ‘hook’ and engage the children’s interest.

Curriculum Impact: What is our intended outcome?

The Geography curriculum has been designed, primarily, to ensure the children understand the world in which we live. The children will be confident and skilled in locating places across the world, through the use of maps and atlases. Through the use of geographical vocabulary, children will be able to express their knowledge and understanding of the places and people they explore.

As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

Providing opportunities for children to take responsibility of their own learning, children will leave KS2 with a solid foundation of skills which will support future learning.

EYFS

Children in EYFS make sense of the physical world they live in through exploration and observation of the local area and community.  Using large maps and atlas allow the children to observe the wider world. Topic themes and a carefully chosen range of books and personal experiences support their developing understanding of the world. Children will use interest based topics to:

  • Talk about the people and places in the local area.
  • Begin to know the similarities and differences between places.

 KS1

In KS1, children study location knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, alongside geographical skills and fieldwork. children develop an awareness of the local area and its human and physical characteristics. They study the countries across world, comparing climate, landscapes and cultures. A wide range of vocabulary is used to support children's understanding and meaning of geographical concepts, as well as ensuring progression is evident too. Children in this key stage use stories and other sources such as Oddizzi to expand their developing knowledge and understanding of the world.

KS2

Pupils build upon previously learned geographical concepts, through in depth place studies of places within the UK and across the world, including North America, South America and countries within. These studies enable children to enhance their understanding of the different characteristics of a range of landscapes, exploring how they are similar and different. Identifying the location of these places allows the children to understand the difference in climate and how this is changing and impacting the world as a result of human activity and evolving land-use. Vocabulary is a driving tool for enhancing and securing the children's understanding of the challenging geographical concepts covered. Children in this key stage use a range of sources including Oddizzi to expand their developing knowledge and understanding of the world.

Fieldwork

At Dubmire, fieldwork is a key concept which is threaded and interlinked within units of work. Children are provided with 'hands on' practical visits to a range of places which they study. On these visits, the children experience first hand the human and physical characteristics of a location, which they explore and record to enhance their learning in the classroom. Virtual learning visits are also used through Oddizzi, which provides a realistic experience for children.
